Exhibitions

Many of the artefacts featured on this site can be seen ‘in person’ at museums across Scotland. In Orkney, you will find material permanently on display at The Orkney Museum, Tankerness House, Kirkwall (see website), and at Stromness Museum, in Stromness (see website). Both have wide ranging collections which both complement and create a context for the material presented here. Large collections of Orcadian material are also held in Edinburgh at National Museums Scotland (see website), and in Glasgow at the Hunterian Museum (see website). Not all of these collections are on permanent display, but you will be able to see material from key sites together with outstanding examples of most artefact categories.

A temporary exhibition relating to this project was shown in Orkney between June and September 2017. Combining displays at The Orkney Museum, Kirkwall, and Stromness Museum and the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, the show was entitled Conversations with Magic Stones, the name derived, with a slight adaptation, from a sculpture by Barbara Hepworth.
